Sleep Deprivation – Sleep Study on Sleep Loss and Memory

Recently, sleep deprivation effects were investigated in a sleep study. The study examined participant’s ability to recall information viewed in crime scene photos. The subjects read eyewitness accounts related to the crime and then were shown crime scene photos that contained information that conflicted with the eyewitness accounts. The subject’s job was to be able to accurately recall what was in the crime scene photo. Half of the subjects were sleep deprived, while the other half were allowed to sleep at night. Those suffering sleep loss proved to be more likely to falsely believe the witness narratives matched the crime scene photos. The link between lack of sleep and faulty memory was established through the data collected from the 104 college-aged subjects, and published in the journal Psychological Science.

The insomnia insights of this new sleep study can impact law enforcement investigations and criminal prosecutions. Knowing chronic sleep deprivation’s effects on our mind’s ability to accurately recall memories can lead to a new line of questioning. Sleep studies show that there are different types of sleep:

  • REM sleep – 0-25 percent of our time sleeping consists of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. We experience dreams during REM sleep, and this type of sleep is important for dealing with our emotions, mental stress, and memory consolidation.
  • Non-REM sleep – 75-80 percent of our sleeping time consists of non-REM sleep, which is classified into 3 categories:

1. N1 – This is the lightest sleep category. Since it’s a transitional phase between sleep and waking, it’s not true sleep.

2. N2 – Deeper sleep is classified as N2

3. N3 –This is the deepest sleep phase, and we need it to get restored from stress and fatigue during the day.

Insomnia leads to increased N1 sleep and decreased N3 sleep. N3 and REM sleep are essential for improved memory and skills. Sleep deprivation leads to decreased work efficiency, poor memory and ability to concentrate, and a lack of energy.

Sleep Solutions

While many sleep disorders contribute to poor sleep, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the main culprit. Sleep apnea patients experience decreased or a complete absence of N3 sleep. OSA leads to a much greater risk of diabetes mellitus, heart disease, strokes, and hypertension. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) treatment is the best solution for OSA.   • Humidifiers – These might help if your snoring is due to nasal congestion or allergies that are made worse with dry air.
  • Avoiding alcohol – Since alcohol relaxes muscles that open your airways and can cause less restful sleep, skipping a nightcap before bedtime may reduce snoring.

In a study involving 1,265 volunteers over the course of 2,097 nights, researchers analyzed sleep data in order to arrive at a definitive answer about the lunar cycles’ affect on sleep. The researchers were unable to replicate previous findings about a connection between sleep and lunar phases. During the course of the research, several unpublished null findings, some involving more than 20,000 sleep nights, were uncovered. This indicated that publication bias played a part in the conflicting results.

In this latest study, the findings showed that sleep patterns were unaffected by lunar cycles. Therefore, the conclusion reached was that the moon has nothing to do with human sleep.

Perhaps, if you feel the need to bay at the moon or find your face covered in hair in the middle of the night, there may be further studies to determine a lunar connection. However, if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation and looking for answers on how to get to sleep, scientists will need to look elsewhere than up in the sky to offer a solution.

Being a new parent of a newborn has many challenges. Perhaps one of the most difficult is the lack of sleep, which can impact your ability to deal with everything else. There is help for getting baby to sleep though, so don’t despair. Let’s take a look at baby sleep patterns, and what you can do to help both of you get longer, more restful sleep.

Wishing Your Newborn Would Sleep LongerA newborn baby crying is like an alarm clock that rings just as soon as you get settled in, and can’t be put on snooze. Before discussing sleep solutions, you should understand why they’re crying. Baby sleep habits include both non-rapid eye movement (NREM or non-REM) sleep and: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, just like adults. Each REM or non-REM cycle lasts 30-45 minutes. Newborn babies are tired from being born, and their brains aren’t developed enough to make much fuss when they awaken after a cycle, so they’ll usually keep sleeping after a cycle ends. At about 8 weeks old, the baby sleep schedule changes. They become less able to continue sleeping due to their developed awareness about being awake and increased hunger.

The ideal infant sleep schedule is 90-minute periods during the day and a few hours at night. We have a few tips for how to get baby to sleep this long:

1. Don’t get the baby up when he/she first awakens. You can shush and pat the baby until it falls back to sleep, and just help the baby resettle in their own bed. This way, babies will eventually need less settling and learn how to go back to sleep on their own.
2. Remove distractions from the bedroom. A boring environment with blank walls, free from things dangling over the cot, will help a baby’s ability to return to sleep.
3. Put the baby to bed really full to avoid being awoken by hunger. You many need to feed your baby a second time before bedtime.

After a little time, these newborn sleep practices can make a difference. With everyone sleeping better, you’ll be much better able to enjoy the waking moments.
