Being sleep deprived may be your best excuse the next time you forget something or make a mistake in recalling an event. Sleep studies’ data can even be used to support your defense.

Sleep Deprivation – Sleep Study on Sleep Loss and Memory

Recently, sleep deprivation effects were investigated in a sleep study. The study examined participant’s ability to recall information viewed in crime scene photos. The subjects read eyewitness accounts related to the crime and then were shown crime scene photos that contained information that conflicted with the eyewitness accounts. The subject’s job was to be able to accurately recall what was in the crime scene photo. Half of the subjects were sleep deprived, while the other half were allowed to sleep at night. Those suffering sleep loss proved to be more likely to falsely believe the witness narratives matched the crime scene photos. The link between lack of sleep and faulty memory was established through the data collected from the 104 college-aged subjects, and published in the journal Psychological Science.

The insomnia insights of this new sleep study can impact law enforcement investigations and criminal prosecutions. Knowing chronic sleep deprivation’s effects on our mind’s ability to accurately recall memories can lead to a new line of questioning. Will sleeping disorders disqualify witnesses or discredit their testimony? Will sleep problems of crime victims make it harder for their claims to be believed and successfully prosecuted?

Sound sleep is essential to good health. sleep deprivation have been linked to harmful changes in our biochemistry. Vital restoration and repair on a biochemical level is thought to take place while we sleep. Studies on animals who were completely sleep deprived revealed critically abnormal metabolism, weight gain unrelated to food intake, skin lesions, and other problems. Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders can cause health issues like heart problems, and even cause death. Learning how to sleep better can not only improve your clear recall of the past, but your life.

Being sleep deprived takes a terrible toll on your physical and mental health. Chronic sleep problems put you at risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, depression, and more. However, ways to help you sleep soundly are available.Sleep Problems

Sleep Study Findings

Sleep studies show that there are different types of sleep:

  • REM sleep – 0-25 percent of our time sleeping consists of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. We experience dreams during REM sleep, and this type of sleep is important for dealing with our emotions, mental stress, and memory consolidation.
  • Non-REM sleep – 75-80 percent of our sleeping time consists of non-REM sleep, which is classified into 3 categories:

1. N1 – This is the lightest sleep category. Since it’s a transitional phase between sleep and waking, it’s not true sleep.

2. N2 – Deeper sleep is classified as N2

3. N3 –This is the deepest sleep phase, and we need it to get restored from stress and fatigue during the day.

Insomnia leads to increased N1 sleep and decreased N3 sleep. N3 and REM sleep are essential for improved memory and skills. Sleep deprivation leads to decreased work efficiency, poor memory and ability to concentrate, and a lack of energy.

Sleep Solutions

While many sleep disorders contribute to poor sleep, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the main culprit. Sleep apnea patients experience decreased or a complete absence of N3 sleep. OSA leads to a much greater risk of diabetes mellitus, heart disease, strokes, and hypertension. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) treatment is the best solution for OSA. CPAP treatment uses slight positive pressure to increase the amount or air you inhale and make breathing easier. OSA patients should also stop drinking alcohol and smoking, and maintain a healthy body weight.

Sleep aid medication may not be the right answer, and can be dangerous when overused or combined with other medications. If you experience difficulty sleeping, daytime fatigue, or your sleep partner observes your lack of breathing while sleeping or moderate to severe snoring, contact a sleep clinic now. Sleep apnea can be deadly, and a proper diagnosis and sleep apnea treatment can get your life and good health back on track, starting with a sound night’s sleep.

Know these facts before reaching for the prescription bottle. Insomnia affects about 25% of the adult population in the U.S. For those with sleep disorders, it’s the number one complaint. I don’t want to you to stay up worrying, but the following statistics are alarmingInsomnia Treatment Sleep drugs

  • Chronic or severe insomnia affects 50-70 million Americans
  • Women face a higher risk for insomnia than men
  • 44% of the adults ages 55-84 in the U.S. have interrupted sleep at least three nights a week.
  • Sleep disorders are related to stress, health conditions, living in an assisted living facility or nursing home, and circadian rhythms changes due to age.
  • Side effects of insomnia include obesity, diabetes, pain, depression, stroke, heart attack, and higher blood pressure.
  • Older adults make up 13% of the U.S. population, and about a third of them are taking an over-the-counter (OTC) medication.
  • OTC sleep aids are used at least 20 days a month by 35% of adults 50 and older, according to a recent study.

Even if the best sleep aid for insomnia works like a charm, long-term or every day use can be dangerous.. Prescription insomnia cures are usually recommended to be taken on a limited basis. This is especially true for older Americans, due to the side effects associated with the active ingredient diphenhydramine. Older adults taking medications more than 2-3 days need to be aware of the side effects associated with diphenhydramine, including delirium, cognitive impairment, increased aging, and others.

Pros and cons of OTC insomnia treatment medications for older adults haven’t been determined. However, with the increased risk of side effects and .the likelihood that other prescription and OT are often used with them, a deadly combination may be created. Women may face an increased risk, since they often metabolize certain drugs slower than men and require lower doses.

If you need sleep apnea treatment or suffer from another sleep disorder, it’s important to speak to your doctor and not self-medicate. You deserve a good night’s sleep, but not at the risk of having a permanent resting place.

Effective obstructive sleep apnea treatment to allow proper breathing while sleeping is a big deal. Those suffering sleep disorder symptoms often go undiagnosed, since the main symptoms for sleep apnea, snoring and daytime fatigue, are easily ignored. Left undiagnosed and untreated, the lack of air while sleeping can be fatal.Does Sleep Apnea Cause Weight Gain Or Vice Versa

What cures sleep apnea? Sleep apnea help will depend on related conditions, which can include heart disease, hypertension, and being overweight. When it comes to excess weight, the question of what caused your sleep disorder is like asking whether the chicken came before the egg. Is finding the answer to how to get your baby to sleep all night your biggest dream? Except that it’s a daydream, since you can’t remember when you slept soundly enough to have night dreams? A crying baby can drive a new parent over the edge, or standing at the brink and looking over.Get kids to sleep

Parents lose much sleep in search of baby sleep solutions. Some spend big money on fancy baby cribs and toddler beds. Others use methods that alter the baby sleep pattern. Some are driven to acts of desperation, such as begging, praying, and saying magic incantations. If you’ve experimented with every baby sleep schedule, lullaby, soothing toy, etc. to no avail, and are a bleary-eyed bundle of stress, there may be a cheap and easy sleep solution.

After giving birth, my baby cried so loudly, I wondered if it was possible for him to break his own eardrums. I also feared it would break my spirits, I had tried everything and was getting frantic. I polled my friends about their recommendations for what works to get baby to sleep. I admit to being quite jealous, and even suspect, of those who said they had no issue with getting their baby to sleep all night.

One friend’s suggestion for changing new baby sleep habits was so simple, it seemed to good to be true. My friend Mary told me to read a bedtime story, and it worked! Not only did we all finally get some sleep, but my child later became an avid reader, and in turn, a better student.

We all know the magic of books for our mind, but now I appreciate their magic as a sleep solution for getting kids to sleep. Next time you wish you had a magic wand to make your baby’s crying dis appear, trying reading a story about Harry Potter’s magic wand instead. It may silence your own howler, without the aid of movie magic.

Snoring problems can cause great distress to sleeping partners, and may even indicate a deadly problem. There are effective snoring cures, so don’t despair- separate bedrooms or divorce aren’t necessary for relief.Ways to Stop Snoring

First, you should understand what causes the snoring. The reason why people snore is due to a narrowing of the airway that causes air to vibrate the throat’s soft tissue as they breathe. Sometimes it may be caused by allergies or nasal congestion, but it may be due to sleep apnea, which can stop the snorer from breathing at all and be deadly.

How to stop snoring can be addressed after getting an accurate diagnosis of the cause. There are many snore remedies being marketed, so we’ll give you the skinny before you waste money on hype and false promises of relief.

Stop Snoring Remedies

  • Stop snoring devices

1. Nasal strips are generally more effective for quieting snoring, rather than eliminating it.

2. A mouthpiece to stop snoring devices may be effective for those with sleep apnea who don’t successfully respond to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatments.

3. Nasal valves are another option for sleep apnea sufferers, but since they’re for one-time use and are available over the counter, they can be costly.

4. Snore pillows have an effect on the neck’s position, but since people don’t stay put during the night, their effectiveness is questionable.

  • Side Sleeping – This may eliminate snoring since sleeping on one’s side puts less pressure on the throat than sleeping on your back. You can try wearing a shirt backwards with a tennis ball in the pocket to prevent rolling onto your back again.
  • Weight Loss – Excess neck tissue may further restrict airways and cause snoring. Therefore, losing weight may help, especially when snoring only develops after weight gain.
  • Snoring surgery – If your snoring is so bad that surgery is recommended, you probably have sleep apnea. CPAP treatment is the optimal treatment for sleep apnea, and surgery should be considered only if CPAP treatment doesn’t resolve the problem.
  • Humidifiers – These might help if your snoring is due to nasal congestion or allergies that are made worse with dry air.
  • Avoiding alcohol – Since alcohol relaxes muscles that open your airways and can cause less restful sleep, skipping a nightcap before bedtime may reduce snoring.

There are some barbaric snoring cures out there, like the zapping device my mom bought for my dad. Hopefully, you can use the recommendations above to curb an urge to use torturous methods of getting relief from a snorer, and both of you can have sweet dreams.

Do you believe in werewolves? The affect of lunar phases on human behavior has been questioned for many years. Past sleep studies on the correlation between lunar cycles and sleep patterns have been inconclusive.Does a Full Moon Keep You Up at Night Some studies have shown that women are more affected by the moon’s phase, while others have shown men are more affected. Therefore, scientists recently decided to conduct a more objective, conclusive study of the connection between the moon and sleep disorders.

In a study involving 1,265 volunteers over the course of 2,097 nights, researchers analyzed sleep data in order to arrive at a definitive answer about the lunar cycles’ affect on sleep. The researchers were unable to replicate previous findings about a connection between sleep and lunar phases. During the course of the research, several unpublished null findings, some involving more than 20,000 sleep nights, were uncovered. This indicated that publication bias played a part in the conflicting results.

In this latest study, the findings showed that sleep patterns were unaffected by lunar cycles. Therefore, the conclusion reached was that the moon has nothing to do with human sleep.

Perhaps, if you feel the need to bay at the moon or find your face covered in hair in the middle of the night, there may be further studies to determine a lunar connection. However, if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation and looking for answers on how to get to sleep, scientists will need to look elsewhere than up in the sky to offer a solution.

Being a new parent of a newborn has many challenges. Perhaps one of the most difficult is the lack of sleep, which can impact your ability to deal with everything else. There is help for getting baby to sleep though, so don’t despair. Let’s take a look at baby sleep patterns, and what you can do to help both of you get longer, more restful sleep.

Wishing Your Newborn Would Sleep LongerA newborn baby crying is like an alarm clock that rings just as soon as you get settled in, and can’t be put on snooze. Before discussing sleep solutions, you should understand why they’re crying. Baby sleep habits include both non-rapid eye movement (NREM or non-REM) sleep and: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, just like adults. Each REM or non-REM cycle lasts 30-45 minutes. Newborn babies are tired from being born, and their brains aren’t developed enough to make much fuss when they awaken after a cycle, so they’ll usually keep sleeping after a cycle ends. At about 8 weeks old, the baby sleep schedule changes. They become less able to continue sleeping due to their developed awareness about being awake and increased hunger.

The ideal infant sleep schedule is 90-minute periods during the day and a few hours at night. We have a few tips for how to get baby to sleep this long:

1. Don’t get the baby up when he/she first awakens. You can shush and pat the baby until it falls back to sleep, and just help the baby resettle in their own bed. This way, babies will eventually need less settling and learn how to go back to sleep on their own.
2. Remove distractions from the bedroom. A boring environment with blank walls, free from things dangling over the cot, will help a baby’s ability to return to sleep.
3. Put the baby to bed really full to avoid being awoken by hunger. You many need to feed your baby a second time before bedtime.

After a little time, these newborn sleep practices can make a difference. With everyone sleeping better, you’ll be much better able to enjoy the waking moments.
